CHCH South Rotary is one of a kind, in that we have our own Young Adults Group (YAG). The YAG is essentially a committee, with an allocated budget from the overall budget. We are different to other Clubs because we are the only Club to have an internal group like this.
Part of the YAG is about making Rotary fun for the younger generation. Rotary is not just for retirees, but for everyone of all ages and walks of life. We are battling the stereotypes with our fantastic group of nine full club members and two associates under 30.
The YAG runs its own fundraisers which range from quiz nights, dinner at Winnie Bagoes, sausage sizzles and movies. All of our funds go into our budget to use in the local community, or our Pacific Island neighbours. We also get involved in the wider Club fundraisers as and when we can.
Some examples of where we spend our time and fundraised money are:
- Annual interschool speech competition for Year 7 and 8 children.
- We travelled to Samoa twice to participate in the four year Literacy Project which provided all government primary schools on the islands of Upolo and Savaii with book cases and books for their libraries
- Gardening community areas such as Waltham Community Cottage
Part of being involved in Rotary is fellowship and inclusion. We have many leadership opportunities for YAG and all positions such as Deputy, Chairperson, Board member etc are all open for YAs to fill if they so wish. We are proud to say that our Club President for 2018-2019 President will be a YAG member, and we look forward to having such a young President.
Our Club also has a variety of other fun social activities to get involved in such as:
- Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner (surprise dinner at a fellow Rotarian’s)
- Theatre visits
- Walking group
- YAG run the Rotary evening several times a year
- Partner’s evening
We realise that the cost of Rotary can be an inhibiting factor to join, so we try and lower the cost as much as possible for those who aren’t in full time employment. We subsidise meals as well as the membership subscription. We also do not have the expectation that you must attend Rotary every week.
We hope to expand our YAG and would love for you to get in touch about coming along one night to see what our Club has to offer.
We look forward to seeing you soon!
