Ferrymead Rotary has been running a Lego competition for school children since 2009 and this year it will be held on 9 July at Heathcote Valley School. Open to children from any primary and intermediate school, most entrants come from the eastern area but some have traveled across town to enjoy the fun...
Arranged on an age-group basis, team events involve teams making models on a given theme, using blocks supplied by Lego New Zealand. Teams can be organised in advance or made up on the day as people arrive. Individual event contestants bring models with them on the day - either original designs or models copied from elsewhere. Many of the models have been very imaginative and are complex with many moving parts.
Originally intended as an event to broaden community life, the competition has been an important focus for children as they and their families cope with earthquake-related stress - in the same way that the permanent "Imagination Station" Lego facility has done in New Regent Street.
